  • The History of Shelter Island, San Diego

Originally a sandbar that was visible at low tide, Shelter Island wasn’t even accessible from mainland San Diego until 1953. It was only as soil and sand were dumped there from the San Diego River and dredging materials were piled up during World War II that the sandbar-turned-island started to become something of a landmark. In the early 1950s, the city and harbor developed the island—dredging a yacht basin and creating a deep water channel into the bay, raising the land up above high tide, and adding the causeway that connects it to Point Loma.

Day Two: Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Seals, Shopping, and Fabulous Mexican Food

Start your day with an early-risers coffee walk around the island, followed by a leisurely breakfast at the hotel. Next, explore the stunning Sunset Cliffs and caves, where you might spot gray whales or brave cliff divers.

Highlights:

  • Sunset Cliffs Nature Exploration: These cliffs were formed from sedimentary deposits over millions of years, providing dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean. Watch for gray whales during their migration.

  • Lunch and Shopping in La Jolla: Enjoy Mexican food and explore the area known for its beautiful beaches, breathtaking views, and cultural attractions. La Jolla, meaning “the jewel” in Spanish, was originally settled by the Kumeyaay people and became part of San Diego in 1850. It’s now home to upscale boutiques, art galleries, and the renowned La Jolla Playhouse.

  • Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Walk: This reserve features the rare Torrey pine tree, which only grows here and on Santa Rosa Island. The park also offers stunning ocean views and a chance to spot dolphins and bobcats. Named after botanist John Torrey, the tree species is among the rarest pines in the world.

  • Relaxing Dinner: Unwind with a poolside dinner or dine in your room if you prefer some downtime.

  • Twilight Tranquility: End your day with a relaxing dip in the pool or share stories around the beach bonfire.

Fun Facts:

  • La Jolla’s coast is home to one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in California, with La Jolla Cove being a popular spot for snorkeling and scuba diving.
  • The Sunset Cliffs area is also known for its unique intertidal zone, which hosts a variety of marine life that can be seen during low tide.

Kick off the day with a hearty group breakfast at the hotel to get energized. Then, embark on a Seal Boat Tour, weaving through scenic San Diego streets before splashing down into the bay. • Seal Boat Tour: Glide through San Diego Bay, rich in military history with views of the USS Midway and Naval Base San Diego, home to the Pacific Fleet.
  • Lunch in Seaport Village: Savor seafood with a stunning view. Seaport Village, opened in 1980, is built on land that was once a thriving commercial fishing area.

  • Private Sunset Dinner Cruise: Enjoy a luxurious cruise through Mission Bay, spotting dolphins, gray whales, and blue whales. The bay was originally a tidal marsh before being developed into a recreational area in the 1940s.
  • Evening Relaxation: Unwind with late-night fun at the hotel pool or private beach.
