BEATRICE BRADLEY EXPERIENCE TRAVEL

The motto at Beatrice Bradley is “We do not tour places, we experience places,” and its South Dakota trip lives up to that philosophy. The company’s tours are designed for women over the age of 45 who love the USA and want to experience its rich history. Trips created by the Beatrice Bradley team are meant to mimic a “friends getaway,” so whether traveling with your own friends or heading out solo, everyone feels at home. Balance is a key component to these trips, so days are filled with exciting adventures, chances for a peaceful walk or an early morning fishing trip, and time to relax by a bonfire at night. Each trip is headed by one or two Beatrice Bradley hosts.

The South Dakota trip begins at Chamberlain’s Thunderstik Lodge, which the group has all to itself. All meals are prepared by the lodge’s chef, and there is plenty of time to walk the beautiful grounds and hang out with the property’s pheasant dogs. ‘Forever Friendships’: Conservative, Older Women’s Travel Group Is Booming

Between the elections and a pandemic, 2020 brought about deep divisions that made it difficult for people to reach out and form connections during a time when it was needed most.

In the aftermath, Deborah Schutt, Kim Kalan, and Jane Rabe, entrepreneurs with plenty of travel experience, had embarked on a venture to get women back out into the world. They tried wine and cheese events. They tried mother-daughter trips. Kalan, who ran outdoor businesses Gage Outdoors and Big Hat Outdoors with her husband, tried asking that clientele, mostly men, if they’d gift girls trips to their wives.

They were all complete and utter flops.

After a year and a half of failed launches and money lost, the trio went out to lunch together, albeit a little sadly, Kalan said. There, they came up with one more idea.

“We said, let’s see if we can get conservative women to travel together,” Kalan recalled. It turned out to be the perfect formula. The idea would turn into Beatrice Bradley (bbgage.com), a travel club where women would travel solo but experience a destination together in a group of no more than a dozen with a host who has everything already booked and planned.

They put up a Facebook ad targeting conservative, patriotic women over 50, and immediately got a response. That first day, Kalan remembers seeing alerts about new sign-ups by the minute. By the Fourth of July, they had received some 700 members, and Facebook shut the ad down. In 2022, the group organized 32 trips, and this year will see 55. Next year there are some 70 trips planned, more than doubling their first year, with other ventures in the works. Broader travel industry statistics show similar growth: Solo travel is the biggest growing sector, and the vast majority of these travelers are female. A quarter of Americans reported considering a solo trip this year.

“Somehow we stumbled upon it over chicken wings and salad,” Kalan said. “It’s truly magical … these women come together, and a lot of these women come from a bad spot … and they come and they heal. It truly is magical.”

Friendships Forged Through Adventure

Debbie Henderson lost her husband a few years ago. They had been a close couple, and Henderson cared for him all the way to the end. She’d brought him home from the hospital, and set up a hospital bed for him in their home by a window and slept nearby. She heard him take his last breaths, saw him close his eyes for the last time, and then she called the funeral home and crawled into bed beside him to wait. After he passed, she fell into a deep depression, losing her appetite for life. She dropped a drastic amount of weight and was skeletal at 95 pounds, when one days she woke up and realized she had stopped living herself, and decided it had been long enough.

“I started my journey back to living again and that’s when I found Beatrice Bradley and that’s why I tell them that they saved my life,” Henderson said. “I needed to get back to my life and they gave me the opportunity.”

Henderson isn’t the only one with a story like this, Kalan explained. Some of these women lost spouses by death or divorce, some have lost children to suicide, and many have lost friends. She can hear the courage they’ve mustered up in order to book these trips when she speaks to them by phone, and she’s experienced numerous times in person the transformation that they undergo on these five to seven day trips. Schutt remembers one woman who told her she hadn’t laughed in the past two years after losing her husband and lived in a cloud of gloom, but on that trip she took she smiled and laughed every single day.

“Jane and Deborah and I, we’ve lost a lot of our friends. And it’s hard. It’s sad. You don’t know how to have fun anymore. So these women come on these trips, and they truly learn how to have fun again,” Kalan said. “They’re all grandmas going ziplining, going rafting, hiking, eating fabulous food.”

Women the average age of 67 decide to step into an adventure, ziplining together and swimming with the manatees. The more adventurous the trip, the more it seems to appeal to the older set, Kalan quipped, and on every trip these hosts hear women say that they’d had the trip of a lifetime. But, they add, the magic of it is really in the camaraderie.

Henderson and her husband had both been in the travel business and took vacations together frequently, but traveling alone seemed too intimidating for her. With a group of other women, in similar age range and with similar views—Beatrice Bradley stresses repeatedly in its signup process that the club is for conservative, patriotic women who love America—Henderson and other women said they have one less thing to worry about. There’s no fear being ostracized on a trip, or a political debate dividing a travel group; and as such the travelers usually leave behind the issues of politics altogether in pursuit of adventure.

Ivy McKinney has a long bucket list of places she wanted to experience, and a husband who will travel but doesn’t quite enjoy it. Many times, she says, he will ask whether one of her girlfriends could go with her instead. She considered traveling alone, but wasn’t quite sold on the idea of having to plan out everything herself and then sit in restaurants alone. The meticulous planning at Beatrice Bradley convinced McKinney after her first trip to then book five more, many of them with women she met on her first trip.

“They just think of everything,” McKinney said. The trips are paid for up front, and travelers book their own flights. Once they arrive, hotels, meals, snacks, itinerary, and everything else is covered for and considered, so there aren’t additional fees or planning to take care of while you’re there, McKinney said. The company is a boutique one, selecting unique accommodations like a mansion in the mountains and local chef-driven restaurants. It’s not budget travel; trip costs run in the thousands. McKinney’s New York City Christmas trip was around $3,000, and international trips run higher, Schutt’s recent Costa Rica and Ireland trips coming out between $6,000 and $7,000. At this price tag, the Beatrice Bradley team is conscious that the trips are truly special experiences for these women, and make it so that the women need not focus on anything but enjoying the experience.

“And the great thing is, that was kind of unexpected for me, was that I made friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life,” McKinney said. “I know all about their lives and they know all about mine, so it’s really forever friends. You just don’t really have the opportunity to make friends like that in your day to day life.”

At the request of several club members, the Beatrice Bradley team cautiously ventured into couples’ trips. One such trip went well this year, and more may come in the future. The founders say a travel club for younger women, in their 30s and 40s, is also on the horizon.

Beatrice Bradley is named after Schutt’s grandmother, Beatrice Belle Baker Bradley.

“My grandmother was a take-no-prisoners kind of feisty women,” Schutt said. “She’d say, come and let’s have a little adventure today. I remember when I was 4 she took me to the movie ‘Gigi’ … we’d grab our coats and get into the car and go somewhere, just spend the day doing something fun.”

“She really, really said to me, you need to embrace adventure. Have fun. Don’t be afraid of it. Don’t let anybody talk you out of something. Be fearless. Push yourself and try something new and different, you’re going to enjoy life so much more,” Schutt said. “She was very bold in that way, well before her time.”

Beatrice did not have the opportunity to travel the world, or much at all, but the fearlessness Schutt admired in her grandmother inspired her to name the travel club after her. “It puts people together and gives them a chance to be fearless and embrace adventure and meet all these new people.”

Review: You don’t even need to take your wallet with you once you arrive. All your needs are taken care of by the hosts. The hosts make sure your experience is spectacular. They get the perfect photos to document your adventure, they make sure everyone is comfortable and safe, there is an endless supply of food, snacks and drinks. Review: The Costa Rica adventure was so amazing, the wildlife, the food, the 5 star hotel, the local people and best of all the bond made by all the ladies on the trip. At the hotel, people kept asking us if we were all best friends and we were even though we had just met. We saw a mother and baby humpback whale up close, sloths, 4 kinds of monkeys, crocodiles, maccaws and toucans, and much more. The trip was well organized, and the hostesses made sure we all were comfortable with all activities. I would do it again and look forward to more trips with BB.

Review: It was my first actual trip to Nashville. I thought I knew a lot about Nashville, but I learned that there is a singer on every corner and most of them are pretty good. We listened to lots and lots of bands, and it was so much fun. Also, if you’re in Nashville, you really must try the hot chicken. It is a thing for a reason, I was so tempted to buy some pink Reinstein cowboy boots. I saw them everywhere but I don’t see them everywhere where I live so I did restrain myself. It wasn’t easy lol.

If you are considering traveling with this group, you won’t be traveling alone. It is a real girls trip. You meet your hostesses at the baggage claim and they make every effort to make you feel welcome and wanted the first dinner you made last rest of your life. if you’re thinking about it do it you won’t regret it

Review: Bags packed, and ready for my first flight, I was excited and looking forward to my trip to Iceland, with the Beatrice Bradley travel group. With only 48 hours until my first flight I began to feel ill. The next morning I felt worse and tested for Covid…..positive! No way, I tested again….positive! I called Debra immediately to break the news that I had to cancel my trip. No way I could travel. She was sad, and told me they would miss me in Iceland. Of course cancelling only hours before travel probably meant that no refund was possible for my tour. I immediately cancelled my Iceland Airline ticket, but wasn’t offered a refund, only to travel before the date my original ticket was booked (March). For the next week I felt pretty rotten from Covid and staring at my packed suitcase. Feeling better finally, I read my Allianz travel insurance policy and began to gather the information necessary to file my claim electronically….doctor’s letter, copies of credit card and checking account payments, copy of my airline ticket, the tour cancellation policy, and the airline refusal letter to refund my ticket. When Debra returned she checked on me and offered any help I needed to file my travel policy claim. She was able to secure a refund on the meals that were part of the tour, which I did appreciate! Long story short, I filed my claim and waited! Recently I received a text that my claim was being paid in full, that sure did take the sting out of missing my long awaited trip to Iceland.

Review: I understand this was the first intimate tour. This is the best way to travel. We had the opportunity to really get to know one another and have many one on one conversations. Karen, our hostess, was very attentive to all our needs and desires. Karen made the trip over the top!! With such a small group, I felt like I really had the opportunity to talk to each one of my fellow travelers and the tour guides. Review: The Cuban people are the most loving and friendly people I’ve met from another country. Not once did I feel unsafe, the men are real gentleman like I haven’t seen in a long time. Not once did I see a homeless person or drug addict on the street. You won’t see men pretending to be women or women pretending to be something they aren’t.

They love music and seems like everyone learns to dance very young. They take care of family the way they use to. Our drivers were awesome and very handsome.
Don’t hesitate to go and be pampered by the Cuban people.

Our 2 hosts, Jody & Sharon, were absolutely wonderful and so attentive to all of our needs and made us feel cared about and taken care of in 1st class style. We had so many great new experiences, tried new dishes and drinks, made great new friends, shopped for beautiful gifts and we even stayed 1 night in a castle! It was a 1st class trip at an economy plus price! (I even conquered a huge fear of heights by walking over a 66’ rope bridge that’s 100 feet above the ocean. She did not disappoint – even Tom O’Toole our fabulous driver commended Jody at the end of our tour for the places, choices and knowledge she possessed concerning his homeland.

Sharon, is extremely personable and enjoys meeting people and engaging in conversation.

She is loads of fun! Sharon went out of her way to talk to each lady on the trip and make sure that things ran smoothly. I appreciate all the hard work that both did to make our trip memorable.

This was my first overseas trip with Beatrice Bradley. I was met by Sharon at the airport, taken to the hotel where I met up with several other ladies who had flown in a day early. We left the hotel to walk around the city of Dublin and so began our Ireland adventure! I miss seeing everyone at breakfast and learning about the days events!

Review: Mount Rushmore is my second trip with Beatrice Bradley, the first being Texas Ranch. They were both so different yet both so memorable. While Texas Ranch was a unique experience that you couldn’t find elsewhere, Mt. Rushmore and all that accompanies this trip is a must see for any patriot. There is so much to learn about our history and it’s so important to keep our history alive. Our guide, Jeff, had a plethora of information to share with us. I don’t believe we stumped him with any of our questions. The Crazy Horse story and monument was truly awe-inspiring. It won’t be completed in our lifetime but what is happening at that attraction and the developing concept is a must see, as well. I highly recommend this trip.

Review: Oh my goodness – I don’t know WHERE to begin! I could write pages on this subject! I had been thinking for a year about jumping in and taking a trip with BB because I have a husband who is aging (four years older than I) and cannot walk very far so his energy level is quite low so traveling with him has become quite restricted (and not a lot of fun). I kept seeing Ad after Ad about the benefit of SOLO travel with Beatrice Bradley and it sounded like a lot of fun. However, I wasn’t convinced right away about all the “hype” being said by those who had gone on previous trips with the BB organization so I waited and kept reading about all the different trip options and locations and when this trip to Boston came up, I finally decided to take a giant leap of faith and decided to just “go for it”. Boy was I surprised! It was everything I imagined it would be – and MORE!!! It is absolutely TRUE that there are LOTS of like minded women like myself who love our country, are very patriotic and are very supportive of each other – AND – are sincerely desiring to make new friends as they age. Many of the women on these trips have lost their husbands or have been divorced and really need and want the companionship of other women at this time in their lives. These trips afford them a unique opportunity and a safe environment in which to continue to grow in ways that one cannot imagine. I am so grateful that I finally decided to take a chance and went on the Boston trip. It truly had a profound effect on me. Review: Utah was my first solo travel trip and I felt a part of a group the minute I was picked up at the airport. Every day was an adventure of activities to check off my bucket list. Zip lining, horseback riding, and swimming in the Homestead Crater geo-thermal pool! Every meal was a 5-star dining experience and we were able to taste a wide variety of Utah specialties by sharing plates with a “taste” for everyone. Since Shayne had spent many years in the Salt Lake City area, she and Christy were perfect hosts for this trip giving us Utah sightseeing tips along the way. It was wonderful to have everything “taken care of” and in fact, I felt “cared for” which as women and care takers ourselves, is a unique experience. It was particularly nice to be with like-minded women with whom I didn’t have to carefully choose my words – actually it was a relief! At this point in at the women’s lives, no-one was putting on a show, everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there and really just wanted to have fun.

The Maine trip is “low key” which is a great way to try out a BB trip. My next chosen trip will be more adventurous! Ladies, do not hesitate, sign up for a trip and see if BB is for you!

Review: I’ve traveled alone on many occasion and made no real connection with anyone. Your just one of many on the tour, no one is interested in knowing you. They stay to themselves. You don’t know what their beliefs are so nothing to converse about, can be lonely.

I didn’t know what to expect and was delightfully surprised as how much fun this trip was and getting to know women from all over the country. I found this trip with BB to be very different and allowed for women to become friends due to the way the trip is planned and hosted. Don’t hesitate to travel solo, because you are not alone once you meet up with the group. Review: I was a little reluctant to travel solo. I haven’t been single very long and miss traveling with my husband so much. This was my maiden trip to see if I would enjoy it and I really wanted it to be a good experience. It was a wonderful experience. First of all, our hosts were lovely. Once I got to the airport, they took care of everything. Ellen met me outside of baggage claim and had an Uber waiting for us. The hotel was lovely and everyone met for happy hour before our welcome dinner. All of the ladies in our group were happy and friendly. The majority of them were from Montana so I wondered how this Texas girl would fit in to the mix. It was fun at first sight. We were just a gang of girls. Ellen and Sharon took care of everything. We just showed up and enjoyed. This is a lovely way to travel. Everything is planned nicely but no one was pressured to do anything if they would rather not. We all laughed so much and enjoyed the sights and great food. I look forward to more solo travel. I already have another trip booked.

Review: Shayne and Ellen made this a most wonderful trip. The Waldorf Astoria was incredible beautiful and full of history. The activities were entertaining and educational. The food was delicious and plentiful.

The women on this trip were fantastic, they felt like sisters from the very beginning. My roommate went from stranger to one of my besties before the first evening was over.

Review: The best part of this experience was the way that the group interacted with each other. There was only 1 guest that had never experienced BB travel before. Review: Run, don’t walk, to sign up for the Texas Ranch Experience if you are considering it in the least! I can’t say enough good things about Beatrice Bradley and the hospitality at the Ox Ranch, let alone the experience itself. You will see animals from all over the world, all in an environment much like their natural habitat. Our Beatrice Bradley hostesses were delightful and made sure everything went smoothly, and our Ox Ranch Lady Guides were superb! The ladies on the trip were all so nice. I think we all felt very comfortable with each other. And if you are a foodie, you won’t be disappointed. Ox Ranch doesn’t skimp on delicious options, whether it be wild game or something more traditional. This was my first Beatrice Bradley trip and I am already searching for my next one. Review: Every activity was fun, well-planned and enjoyable. I loved the Rainbow River boat ride and the refreshing water of Rainbow River. In the manatee experience, a manatee came up for air right next me, I was able to just watch in awe with my snorkel and mask. The opportunity to connect with people in a relaxing environment was really the best experience of all!

The Beatrice Bradley group took care of every detail and planned for things that might come up. The hostesses are there to make sure you are taken care of, and you that you have a great experience. Review: For years I have traveled alot, and went (in the last two years) solo to Egypt and to South Korea. Not on a tour; because I did not want to deal with ‘woke-liberals’ while traveling.

This travel group was refreshing to have only conservative women participating. The hosts were extremely professional and well organized and genuinely nice women who wanted everyone to have a good experience.

Although we were each “solo’ -after the first night we were a group of nice women who all got along and wanted to enjoy the experience. There was not a pill in the group.

Yes. My first time traveling alone, and it was easy and fun and everything I hoped could be and more. I highly recommend Beatrice and Bradley travel for conservative women. Review: I felt I had seen and felt life in Nashville. The best salmon, chicken and waffles, autumn dinner etc. Loved the music and honky-tonk bars but extremely crowded. The tour guides were knowledgeable and great fun.

Review: I enjoy having the travel decisions and plans all made for me, such as where to eat and tours to take. To not worry about the driving or directions. The trips are well worth the money spent. I like that the restaurants are chosen and one can order anything. I feel the hostess is very generous paying for food orders, such as appetizers and entrees and includes desserts and cocktails. I never felt like I should not order something due to cost. To arrive at destination and have everything planned and prepared is wonderful!

Review: Shane and Christy did a great job maneuvering us thru the hairpin turns thru the mountains. They were always around making sure we were all doing OK.

The other people I want to mention that I think went above and beyond were Sarah and Jordon. They are the nicest couple! They made sure everything was just perfect at the house, the dinner decor for our chef prepared meal was beautiful. And they made sure we saw the bear family. Outside their condo?. They are both wonderful assets to the company.

All of the women in the house were fun, and we all had our own stories (and experiences) to share. This was my second trip and it was better than the first..from a ‘new friends’ perspective. I think the fact that we were all living in the same house and not a hotel was a bonus. There was always someone around to talk to or sit with (or drink with ?. When your in a hotel your sort of isolated. This was like a big happy family situation.

Review: Never realized that Dublin was such a large and vibrant town ; never knew they had so many roundabouts; never knew they had the largest national park. Review: The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta trip was a bucket list item & we were able to see and enjoy the opening morning festivities as well as the evening light show & fireworks. The evening balloon glow was cancelled due to weather. Our VIP tickets were wonderful & provided very delicious and plentiful meals, drinks, and beverages of all kinds!

The walking tours of both Albuquerque and Santa Fe were very informative and we then had some shopping time! The Hyatt Regency Tamaya Resort & Spa was a beautiful place to stay & offered fun extras in their lobby most days…homemade buns & jewelry displays, and the gift shop was so fun to shop!!! This was my second Beatrice Bradley tour and I have loved both of them!

Review: Amazing!!! Shayne and Chrissy made a great team. Shayne is definately in the right business. Great food at the Hot Air Balloon festival and Los Poblanos (the best). The Mexican food places were redundant. Breakfast buffet at the fiesta and hotel were great.

To be with other conservative women took the stress out of my trip. To be with like minded women uplifted my heart and my spirit and made me feel part of a team. I made new friends and didn’t feel lonely for one minute. I have been on other trips and was bullied once they heard I was a conservative. I felt I could be myself and felt that most women were very approachable, supportive of one another and gave it their all.

Being with like-minded conservative women that love this country, value and respect each other was a heartfelt joy! I walked away with new friends and felt uplifted that other women care about our country as much as I do. This is not only a vacation trip for the eyes but also for the soul. I am now reviewing places for my next trip!!

Review: Loved the Rustic Inn in Jackson, Wyoming. The Lark was a convenient location. The Golden Stone Inn was also very nice. Review: The lodge was perfect! The gathering area was so comfortable and large enough for our group to spread out. The rooms and bedding were very nice. Our hosts were very helpful and friendly. I have traveled with groups several times and usually I was the only person who was traveling solo among couples and others who were with people they already knew. It was a pleasure to travel with other women who were also solo and interested in making friends. The “politically like-minded” aspect was also a plus for me. I am looking forward to going on more trips with BB and have already signed up for two.

Review: The lodge was wonderful! Very charming and the staff was wonderful. They were very attentive to everyone’s needs. It was very clean, and the food was very good. The view was magnificent!! The rooms were very nice. The food was very good, and there was a lot of it. It would be nice though if there was a choice between 2 dinners though. This trip made me feel great! I met wonderful women, and I even met someone that lives 25 minutes from me. It was so nice to talk to like minded people without the fear of possibly offending someone. We all shared the same values. I already recommended this group. Going on a trip by yourself can be intimidating, but just after a few minutes, it’s like everyone has known each other and have been friends for years. It was instant bonding.

Review: I loved this trip! I have always wanted to go to Alaska and we did so many fun things from having drinks and apps on the rooftop bar in Anchorage, to seeing all the beautiful glaciers and our last day visiting the Iditarod Dog sledding camp. Absolutely fascinating. We had great food and that was a challenge that Debra managed to work through as so many restaurants were closed Mondays and Tuesdays but she found us places to dine and we dined well.

Review: I felt that the excursion were well planned with trying do as much as possible in such a short time. This was my first trip with BB, I was not sure what to expect and was so pleased with how everything turned out. I met some amazing ladies on this trip & we became very close so quickly, I feel like I’ve made new friends. Review: I enjoyed every moment of this trip! It far exceeded anything that I had in mind from the hotel, the activities and food but more importantly the friendships that I came away with. We came as strangers but left as friends with our heart strings attached. If you are looking for a group ladies to travel with, look no more. This group is amazing and the trips are well planned and your safety and enjoyment are their number priorities. Review: Small group size was great, hosts were excellent. Smaller group meant that they could meet individual needs and we were able to get to know each other quickly. I had travel delays, Jane was great in making sure I had airport pick up and able to join the activities quickly.

Review: We did the amazing race and that was real fun. I introduced everyone to pickle ball. The y did the scurry bikes and went into nisswa on golf carts. Ellen did a excellent bonfire. It was never a dull moment with the hosts. They had a good balance between activities and time on our own. I enjoyed everything that was planned and still enjoyed some time on my own relaxing/reading. I laughed so hard my abs hurt. It was a great group of women.

Review: BB makes vacationing as a single, mature women as easy as it gets. Being unskilled at planning, myself – the women at BB have considered every detail and make each and every day simple and worry-free.

Whether married, widowed, divorced, or decidedly single, beginning a vacation with strangers can generate a bit of worry. But I think I can confidently say that by the end our journey there was an undeniable sisterhood of love and respect, no matter where we fell on the ‘conservative spectrum ~ or maybe even outside it. 🙂

Be reassured that these new acquaintances dotted across our great country have the potential to become joyful, life-long friends. If not a friend, at the very least a place to hang your hat for a visit when your feet happen to land on their little bit of soil. Looking forward to my next trip with BB!

Review: Traveling with Beatrice Bradley was great for my first ‘group’ tour. I left home to meet 11 strangers, and even room with one of them. In the end, I met 11 of the most amazing warm hearted women; we left Annapolis, not as strangers, but as new friends. The amazing threads of life that have touched each of us caused some to open up and share experiences, which will encourage me in the future to reach out and try new things and not be fearful of “solo” travel… just plan it and do it. Thank you Beatrice Bradley for helping me find the strength I had forgotten I had. Review: I am at a transitional time in my life. It was my first foray out being single. I felt safe, cared for, and welcomed by the other girls. It was really good for me to take this trip and I feel like I’ve grown. It doesn’t hurt that I also love history! Great trip, great group of girls. Very welcoming. Very well thought out, from the meals to the hotels, to the transportation. Would definitely recommend!
