The museum and film bring the monument’s history to life, giving you a deeper appreciation for this iconic landmark.
From there, we wind along the Iron Mountain Road, with its twisting pigtail bridges and one-way tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore perfectly in the distance. We’ll pause for photos at Sylvan Lake, a sparkling gem surrounded by granite cliffs, and at the towering Cathedral Spires before continuing along the Needles Highway, where jagged stone pillars rise dramatically against the sky. The drive culminates with the unforgettable Needle’s Eye Tunnel.
In the afternoon, we’ll explore the immense Crazy Horse Memorial. The experience begins with a powerful film, followed by a guided walk through the Indian Museum of North America, which houses over 14,000 artifacts of Native American art and history. Keep watch for pronghorn antelope, elk, and prairie dogs as we make our way across rolling hills and wide grasslands. The park’s most playful residents, the wild burros, often wander up to greet visitors.
We’ll continue the adventure north to Deadwood, a legendary frontier town born during the Gold Rush. Stroll the wooden boardwalks, see historic saloons, and hear stories of colorful characters like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. The town’s preserved charm and Old West atmosphere make it a living museum of American history.

We’ll visit the Ben Reifel Visitor Center to explore exhibits on the park’s fossil history and geology before continuing deeper into the park. Boardwalk trails and viewpoints along the way provide opportunities for close-up views and photographs of this otherworldly terrain.
