The Parade Through Your Lifetime: A Nostalgic Timeline Just for You
1924 — The Parade Begins
Macy’s throws a massive “Christmas Parade” in 1924 with live lions, tigers, and elephants (yes, actual zoo animals).
An estimated 250,000 spectators attended the first parade. Today, about 3.5 million people attend.
1927 — The First Giant Balloon Appears
Felix the Cat becomes the first giant balloon.
Fun fact? They didn’t plan how to get him down.
Balloons were released into the sky at the end of the parade until 1932
People found them all over New Jersey.
1942–1944 — A Pause for WWII
For two years, the parade stopped.
Helium and rubber were sent to the war effort.
This is why 2026 is the 100th parade, even though 102 years have passed since the beginning.
1948 — The First National Telecast
NBC broadcasts the parade nationwide.
This is when millions of American families — including yours — start making the parade part of their Thanksgiving ritual.
1950s — The Parade You Grew Up With
The era of classic Americana.
Broadway performers. Marching bands.
The first versions of the iconic character balloons you grew to love.
1960s–1970s — Balloons Become Superstars
Snoopy arrives.
Mickey and Donald join.
Characters you grew up with suddenly appear floating over New York City.
1980s–1990s — Bigger, Brighter, More Spectacular

enormous balloons requiring 50+ handlers
-
dazzling floats that looked like moving storybooks
If you raised kids during this era, these are the memories you shared as a family.
2000s — A Beloved American Tradition
Through decades of change, the parade remains a comforting constant.
A symbol of gratitude, togetherness, and the holiday season officially beginning.
And now — in its 100th official running — you will be there in person to witness history.
