As your plane touches down in Sioux Falls, South Dakota—often called the “Heart of America”—a new adventure begins. By 3:00 PM, you’ll be greeted and whisked away on a scenic drive through rolling prairies, leading to the legendary Thunderstik Lodge. For those flying private, Chamberlain and Mitchell airports offer an equally convenient arrival.
Perched high above the mighty Missouri River, Thunderstik Lodge welcomes you with its breathtaking views and an undeniable sense of history. From the moment you step onto the lodge’s back porch, a refreshing cocktail in hand, you’ll be captivated by the sweeping landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. Keep watch for majestic mule deer and the lodge’s own buffalo herd grazing in the distance—this is South Dakota at its finest.

If the water still calls your name, set out for another day on the Missouri River’s legendary Walleye lakes. The peaceful flow of the current, the challenge of the catch, and the breathtaking scenery combine for one more shot at filling your cooler and your camera roll.
Option 2: Sharpen Your Skills—Gun Ranges & Shooting Practice
Head to the range for a true marksman’s experience. Whether you’re perfecting your aim or trying out a new firearm for the first time, our expert instructors ensure a safe, skill-building session. Feel the power of precision at the long-range rifle range, take on sporting clays, or experience the excitement of firing a .50 BMG (yes, one shot is included!).
Afternoon Adventure: 4×4 Tour Across Thunderstik’s Rolling Hills
After lunch at the lodge, hop into a 4×4 vehicle and explore Thunderstik’s rugged backcountry trails. Navigate rolling hills, hidden wildlife paths, and panoramic views of the Missouri River—this off-road tour offers adrenaline and scenic beauty in equal measure.
Fun Fact: South Dakota’s rolling prairies are home to some of the oldest exposed rock formations in North America, dating back over 75 million years—you’ll literally be off-roading through ancient history!
Day Four: Explore the Wild West—Your Adventure Awaits
The morning sun greets you with the promise of a day packed with unforgettable moments. After a hearty, hot breakfast shared with the group, we will check out of Thunderstik Lodge and then you will embark on a journey through one of America’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.
Private Tour of Badlands National Park
If you’re ready to trade fishing rods for hiking boots, set off for a private tour of Badlands National Park. Marvel at the layered rock formations, wind-sculpted canyons, and jagged spires carved by centuries of nature’s power. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for roaming bison, agile bighorn sheep, and the ever-playful prairie dogs scattered across the grasslands.
Midday Escape: A Scenic Picnic
- For the anglers, enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch on the river, surrounded by shimmering waters and good company.
- For the explorers, savor your lunch amidst the breathtaking views of the Badlands—every bite feels like part of the adventure.
Evening in Rapid City
- We will head for Rapid City to our beautiful Historic Hotel to check in and then we will have a delicious dinner and share stories from your day’s adventure with the group.
- As night falls, unwind with a nightcap at the bar.
Fun Fact: The Badlands get their name from the Lakota phrase “mako sica,” meaning “bad lands,” due to their rugged terrain, extreme temperatures, and lack of water—though today, they’re considered one of the most stunning and unique national parks in the U.S.
By the end of Day Four, you will have explored ancient landscapes carved by time, you’ll end the day with stories worth telling around the fire.
Day Five: Mount Rushmore and a Crazy Horse private tour in the Black Hills National Forest
Day two of the “Mount Rushmore” trip is a thrilling blend of history and adventure. It starts with a private tour of Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, offering insights into these monumental works. After a scenic picnic and hike at Roughlock Falls, the journey continues to Deadwood, where you explore the historic town’s gold rush past. The adventure continues along Iron Mountain Road with a stop at Norbeck Lookout for breathtaking views, and then onto Needles Highway to marvel at the Cathedral Spires and Eye of the Needle. A serene hike and picnic at Sylvan Lake offer a peaceful respite before driving through the Wildlife Loop to spot buffalo and deer.
