The “Mount Rushmore 2024” trip by BBGage is designed to be moderately active, suitable for women aged 55 and above who are in good health and enjoy walking and outdoor activities. The itinerary includes guided tours, short hikes, and exploration of historic and natural sites, requiring comfortable footwear and a moderate level of physical fitness. Activities such as the buffalo photo safari and visits to various monuments involve some walking and standing. The trip balances adventure with relaxation, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Day One: Arrive in Rapid City, SD – Historic Hotel and Small Town Main Street

Depart from Historic Thunderstik Lodge (if you are on the first trip and adding on the Mount Rushmore/Rapid City trip):

  • Depart from Historic Thunderstik Lodge: For those continuing from the previous trip, drive through the Badlands, arriving in Rapid City around 4 pm.
  • Arrival by Air: For those starting the tour here, fly into RAP (Rapid City, SD) Airport and take a shuttle to the hotel.
  • Check-In: Stay at the Historic Alex Johnson Hotel, a landmark since 1928, known for its unique architecture and storied past.
  • Dinner at Vertex Rooftop Restaurant: Enjoy an evening meal with panoramic views of the city.
  • Dusk Walk on Main Street: Explore the charming Main Street of Rapid City, rich with small-town history and local shops.

Day Two:  Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse private tour in the Black Hill National Forest

Day two of the “Mount Rushmore 2024” trip is a thrilling blend of history and adventure. It starts with a private tour of Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, offering insights into these monumental works. After a scenic picnic and hike at Roughlock Falls, the journey continues to Deadwood, where you explore the historic town’s gold rush past. The excitement peaks with reenactments of Wild West shootouts on Main Street and inside Saloon No. 10. The day ends with a relaxing dinner at Tally’s, filled with local flavors and charm.

Day Three:  Black Hills Bison and the Wild Life Loop 

Day three of the “Mount Rushmore 2024” trip is a whirlwind of scenic beauty and historical wonders. After a hearty breakfast at the Historic Alex Johnson Hotel, the day kicks off with a quick revisit to Mount Rushmore, followed by an immersive experience at the Presidential Wax Museum. The adventure continues along Iron Mountain Road with a stop at Norbeck Lookout for breathtaking views, and then onto Needles Highway to marvel at the Cathedral Spires and Eye of the Needle. A serene hike and picnic at Sylvan Lake offer a peaceful respite before driving through the Wildlife Loop to spot buffalo and deer. The day wraps up with a visit to the State Game Lodge, a farewell South Dakota steak dinner, and a choice between a relaxing nightcap or a fun ice cream run.

  • Depart for Airport (RAP): Head to Rapid City Regional Airport for your departure. Note: If you added this event onto the Thunderstik/Badlands trip, you’ll be flying out of a different airport than you flew into.
