Surrounded by history and breathtaking scenery, we’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the vision and craftsmanship that brought this monument to life.
From there, we’ll journey along the legendary Iron Mountain Road, famous for its winding curves, pigtail bridges, and tunnels that perfectly frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. Along the way, we’ll stop at beautiful Sylvan Lake, admire the dramatic Cathedral Spires, and travel the unforgettable Needles Highway, where towering granite formations rise dramatically from the surrounding forest.
This afternoon, we’ll visit the impressive Crazy Horse Memorial, a monumental tribute to Native American heritage and culture. Through exhibits, film presentations, and the fascinating Indian Museum of North America, we’ll discover the inspiring story behind this ongoing project and its significance to the region.

Day Three: Wildlife & Wild West – Custer State Park and Deadwood
We’ll spend today exploring two of South Dakota’s most iconic treasures – the wildlife-filled landscapes of Custer State Park and the legendary frontier town of Deadwood.
Our journey begins along the park’s famous Wildlife Loop Road, where rolling prairies and open grasslands provide habitat for some of the region’s most beloved residents. Keep your camera ready as we search for bison, pronghorn antelope, elk, prairie dogs, and the park’s famously friendly wild burros, which are known to wander up and greet visitors.
This afternoon, we’ll travel north to historic Deadwood, a colorful Gold Rush town where wooden boardwalks, historic saloons, and tales of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane bring the Old West to life. With its beautifully preserved architecture and fascinating history, Deadwood offers a glimpse into one of America’s most legendary frontier communities.
We’ll gather for dinner in Deadwood before returning to camp, ending the day with memories of wildlife encounters, western legends, and the rugged beauty of the Black Hills.
