The motto at Beatrice Bradley is “We do not tour places, we experience places,” and its South Dakota trip lives up to that philosophy. ‘Forever Friendships’: Conservative, Older Women’s Travel Group Is Booming
Between the elections and a pandemic, 2020 brought about deep divisions that made it difficult for people to reach out and form connections during a time when it was needed most.
In the aftermath, Deborah Schutt, Kim Kalan, and Jane Rabe, entrepreneurs with plenty of travel experience, had embarked on a venture to get women back out into the world. They tried wine and cheese events. They tried mother-daughter trips. Kalan, who ran outdoor businesses Gage Outdoors and Big Hat Outdoors with her husband, tried asking that clientele, mostly men, if they’d gift girls trips to their wives.
They were all complete and utter flops.
After a year and a half of failed launches and money lost, the trio went out to lunch together, albeit a little sadly, Kalan said. There, they came up with one more idea.
“We said, let’s see if we can get conservative women to travel together,” Kalan recalled. It turned out to be the perfect formula. The idea would turn into Beatrice Bradley (bbgage.com), a travel club where women would travel solo but experience a destination together in a group of no more than a dozen with a host who has everything already booked and planned.
They put up a Facebook ad targeting conservative, patriotic women over 50, and immediately got a response. That first day, Kalan remembers seeing alerts about new sign-ups by the minute. By the Fourth of July, they had received some 700 members, and Facebook shut the ad down. In 2022, the group organized 32 trips, and this year will see 55. Next year there are some 70 trips planned, more than doubling their first year, with other ventures in the works. Broader travel industry statistics show similar growth: Solo travel is the biggest growing sector, and the vast majority of these travelers are female. A quarter of Americans reported considering a solo trip this year.
“Somehow we stumbled upon it over chicken wings and salad,” Kalan said. “It’s truly magical … these women come together, and a lot of these women come from a bad spot … and they come and they heal. It truly is magical.”
Friendships Forged Through Adventure
Debbie Henderson lost her husband a few years ago. They had been a close couple, and Henderson cared for him all the way to the end. She’d brought him home from the hospital, and set up a hospital bed for him in their home by a window and slept nearby. She heard him take his last breaths, saw him close his eyes for the last time, and then she called the funeral home and crawled into bed beside him to wait. After he passed, she fell into a deep depression, losing her appetite for life. She dropped a drastic amount of weight and was skeletal at 95 pounds, when one days she woke up and realized she had stopped living herself, and decided it had been long enough.
“I started my journey back to living again and that’s when I found Beatrice Bradley and that’s why I tell them that they saved my life,” Henderson said. “I needed to get back to my life and they gave me the opportunity.”
Henderson isn’t the only one with a story like this, Kalan explained. Some of these women lost spouses by death or divorce, some have lost children to suicide, and many have lost friends. She can hear the courage they’ve mustered up in order to book these trips when she speaks to them by phone, and she’s experienced numerous times in person the transformation that they undergo on these five to seven day trips. Schutt remembers one woman who told her she hadn’t laughed in the past two years after losing her husband and lived in a cloud of gloom, but on that trip she took she smiled and laughed every single day.
“Jane and Deborah and I, we’ve lost a lot of our friends. And it’s hard. It’s sad. You don’t know how to have fun anymore. So these women come on these trips, and they truly learn how to have fun again,” Kalan said. “They’re all grandmas going ziplining, going rafting, hiking, eating fabulous food.”
Women the average age of 67 decide to step into an adventure, ziplining together and swimming with the manatees. The more adventurous the trip, the more it seems to appeal to the older set, Kalan quipped, and on every trip these hosts hear women say that they’d had the trip of a lifetime. But, they add, the magic of it is really in the camaraderie.
Henderson and her husband had both been in the travel business and took vacations together frequently, but traveling alone seemed too intimidating for her. With a group of other women, in similar age range and with similar views—Beatrice Bradley stresses repeatedly in its signup process that the club is for conservative, patriotic women who love America—Henderson and other women said they have one less thing to worry about. There’s no fear being ostracized on a trip, or a political debate dividing a travel group; and as such the travelers usually leave behind the issues of politics altogether in pursuit of adventure.
Ivy McKinney has a long bucket list of places she wanted to experience, and a husband who will travel but doesn’t quite enjoy it. Many times, she says, he will ask whether one of her girlfriends could go with her instead. She considered traveling alone, but wasn’t quite sold on the idea of having to plan out everything herself and then sit in restaurants alone. The meticulous planning at Beatrice Bradley convinced McKinney after her first trip to then book five more, many of them with women she met on her first trip.
“They just think of everything,” McKinney said. The trips are paid for up front, and travelers book their own flights. Once they arrive, hotels, meals, snacks, itinerary, and everything else is covered for and considered, so there aren’t additional fees or planning to take care of while you’re there, McKinney said. The company is a boutique one, selecting unique accommodations like a mansion in the mountains and local chef-driven restaurants. It’s not budget travel; trip costs run in the thousands. McKinney’s New York City Christmas trip was around $3,000, and international trips run higher, Schutt’s recent Costa Rica and Ireland trips coming out between $6,000 and $7,000. At this price tag, the Beatrice Bradley team is conscious that the trips are truly special experiences for these women, and make it so that the women need not focus on anything but enjoying the experience.
“And the great thing is, that was kind of unexpected for me, was that I made friends that I’ll have for the rest of my life,” McKinney said. “I know all about their lives and they know all about mine, so it’s really forever friends. You just don’t really have the opportunity to make friends like that in your day to day life.”
At the request of several club members, the Beatrice Bradley team cautiously ventured into couples’ trips. One such trip went well this year, and more may come in the future. The founders say a travel club for younger women, in their 30s and 40s, is also on the horizon.

Beatrice Bradley is named after Schutt’s grandmother, Beatrice Belle Baker Bradley.
“My grandmother was a take-no-prisoners kind of feisty women,” Schutt said. “She’d say, come and let’s have a little adventure today. I remember when I was 4 she took me to the movie ‘Gigi’ … we’d grab our coats and get into the car and go somewhere, just spend the day doing something fun.”
“She really, really said to me, you need to embrace adventure. Have fun. Don’t be afraid of it. Don’t let anybody talk you out of something. Be fearless. Push yourself and try something new and different, you’re going to enjoy life so much more,” Schutt said. “She was very bold in that way, well before her time.”
Beatrice did not have the opportunity to travel the world, or much at all, but the fearlessness Schutt admired in her grandmother inspired her to name the travel club after her. “It puts people together and gives them a chance to be fearless and embrace adventure and meet all these new people.”

We found that three of us will probably stay in close communication. The dolphin interaction changed me as I am neither a water person nor a risk taker. Review: Most meaningful relationship – my roommate Jackie Jones. Enjoyed sharing all the experiences with her. She is fun, thoughtful, positive attitude. I was inspired by many of the women – what they have been or are going through. Continuing to live, grown and explore. Our group was a majority of widows – from 3 months to many years. Review: This was the first time I have traveled solo. Usually a friend and I travel together. My roommate was a pure delight as was the other ladies on the trip. We all came together as one big group of friends. I have always loved Alaska but this trip brought me closer to the real Alaska experience. It wasn’t just a tourist destination but we got to interact with families and individuals who are just everyday normal people. We got to experience how they live. It was so great to be on the Monkey River Tour and have lunch at the little family restaurant which depends on tourists like us for their very livelihood. Review: Meeting ladies I have never traveled with is always a highlight of the experience. Getting to know them and their prior travels. Sharing the BB experience with those who have never traveled with BB is exciting. Getting to reacquaint with those you’ve traveled with before is a plus. Walking in the rain forest and seeing howler monkeys up close was fantastic. I was surprised at how close we were to be able to get to them. The guides said we were very lucky to be that close. The visit on the last full day with the Garifuna ladies was insightful. Not only the cooking class but also the information learned about how the Garifuna women did their tasks of preparing the corn for tortillas to how they cared for their babies while doing their chores. If I had waited on someone to join me on my trips, I wouldn’t have done much traveling the last few years. I have taken several BB trips where I didn’t know anyone in the group before arrival day. It is surprising how quickly you become acquainted with the ladies in the group. The hosts facilitate that so well. I have made many friends that I still contact. There is one group that is very close and have actually gotten together outside of the BB trips. Also someone will text and say “I’m interested in this trip. Anyone want to join me?”

Review: With my assigned roomie. This was her first BB trip and one of her first travel experiences. I was able to give her travel advice based on my many years of travel, which made me feel good that I was helping another woman find the confidence to travel. The water-based tours taught me about how to identify various sea creatures and their habitats. I would tell her that the BB experiences are very welcoming to all travelers but especially to solo travelers. The hosts make sure everyone is at ease, enjoys the experience and takes care of any problems or concerns of the guests. The fact that everything is very well planned and takes the large and small issues of travel away from the guest so they can just relax and have a great time.

Review: The hostesses, Tracey and Anna, were so very warm and friendly. It felt as if I had known them for years! Tracey and I shared a deep connection to the birth of our country and she was so understanding of the tears of gratitude I shed in Philadelphia. One of the ladies in our group had traveled with BB several times and was very kind to share information and experiences that helped me as a “newbie”. She was so helpful and full of information. I was really not looking forward to the flower show. I like flowers, but I am not a gardener and that is truly not an interest of mine. When we arrived I was blown away by the talent and artistry on display. I learned that “flower show” is a misrepresentation. I arrived to an art show where the medium is flowers. I LOVED IT!

How similar all of us women were even though we were coming from all different States, all different ages, all different life experiences. Don’t hesitate- you will be well taken care of. Review: I met two of the ladies from our group waiting for our connecting flight to FL so I felt like I had two new friends before I got to the house. That connection with Claudette and Sally made me feel like I started out knowing someone already. The excursion we took that stopped in shallow water to allow us to get off the boat and find shells was so much fun and it gave me the courage to overcome my dislike of the cold, cold water and get off the boat. By doing that I was able to find and hold several live sand dollars, marking that off my bucket list. It woke me up to the fact that at 73 years old, any time I get an opportunity to check something off I have to take it! After reaching a point in life where I am able to travel, but not having a travel partner, finding Beatrice Bradley seemed like a perfect solution, and it was! It is not only finding like-minded women but making new friends, seeing new things, and having hosts who made sure that everything was catered to making the trip perfect for each of us. If you haven’t booked a trip yet–DO IT!! Many thanks to Karla and Kristine for making my first trip everything I could have hoped for. They were able to always be a part of the group, and still take excellent care of us. They are very much a part of what made this trip perfect!

Review: I became great friends with Barbara Grant who also arrived early like myself. The entire experience was a learning one. Medhat was an amazing teacher about Egypt. But the best was last (as it should be). The Great Pyramid exploration and the intimate lecture at the Sphinx was the best part of the trip to me. I’ve told several single traveling friends. BBG has a unique way of including all. Even those who know no one. Ellen and Sharon you were great. You always kept us together and kept an upbeat vibe (even during rather testy moments) my only suggestion was the “whale valley” day was much too long. Perhaps skip the lake and/or the pottery place. But other than that it was a trip of a lifetime! Can’t wait for more!!!!

Many of these women have faced challenging situations that could easily stop them from “living”, but these gals choose a different path and continue moving forward with inspiration and hopefulness. Review: Just the overall camaraderie amongst the whole group, hosts included. This was my third time in Hawaii and it did not disappoint. It is just so beautiful and stunning. It takes your breath away I would tell them to just try a short trip. Once you have, you will realized that it is not hard to do. Review: I formed friendships with everyone on the trip. Everyone got along very well and we all had a wonderful time. Swimming with the manatees took me out of my comfort zone. It was such a peaceful and magical experience and I learned so much about these beautiful creatures from the tour guides. The hostesses from the 2 trips that I have taken with BB were friendly, hospitable and made you feel welcomed the moment you met them. They accommodated every need. Review: Met so many people that I am friends with now. This is my 5th trip and everytime is so much fun. I get teary eyed when I leave. Go for it. You may fly by yourself and have your own room but you are never really alone. I like the concept of traveling with all woman because by themselves without a spouse or significant other is more relaxing. Wenndy and Kim were the best. So down to earth and so much fun to be around.

Review: I really enjoyed talking to our guides, Wynndy and Kim. I’m something of an introvert, so I chatted with my fellow travelers quite a bit but would not say I formed a connection. The Crystal River was truly amazing. In general, I would not consider myself an outdoors person, but this trip left me with the wish to visit other natural parks and sites. Seeing so many birds, fish and other animals left me in wonder at the many parts of this ecosystem. I would tell her: “You won’t be alone.” I have traveled alone many times, and the other guests and the guides are very outgoing and interested in everyone participating. I felt very welcomed. Wynndy battled through laryngitis and did an excellent job. Kim is outgoing and very friendly. Together they were fantastic.

Review: No one thing as everyone in the group went out of their way to be welcoming and congenial. I had thought of Las Vegas as being all about casinos and gambling, but I was pleasantly surprised at our Pink Jeep tours that took us outside of the city. Don’t be nervous at all as the group is as welcoming as possible. Any travel experiences that you have will only be fodder for your memory bank. Our two hostesses, Kelly Kittelson and Liz Schwimmer, were as welcoming and congenial as they could be all the time.

Review: I almost canceled the trip following a bad bout with the flu in January. My immune system was not at its best. The hosts Liz and Kelly were very patient with me, and allowed me to go at my own pace. I really enjoyed their company, and how much care they gave me. Truly remarkable women. In fact all the hosts from all the trips have been amazing! All the activities were insightful. I saw a lot, and learned a lot. The most impressive outing to me was the Hoover Dam tour. It still amazes me how the great minds of our ancestors engineered and built the dam. They figured out a way to supply water to multiple states. Once the plane lands, you are never alone. The hosts are there to greet you, and make sure your stay will go as smoothly as possible. They are there to answer any of your questions or concerns. They are only a text away. I absolutely love Liz and Kelly. They were so helpful, and coordinated well with each other. I hope to see them on future trips! 🙂

Review: Everyone was nice, but it was great to regroup with one of the girls I met when I took my first Beatrice Bradley trip back in 2022. This is the second time we’ve met up on a trip. It’s the best way to travel solo. The majority of the women traveling are doing it alone too (I.e. Not with friends or family )and are nervous about meeting new people. There’s always going to be someone that you have something in common within a trip. The hostesses are always so friendly too. I’ve traveled with Kelly before and this is my first time meeting Liz. Both Kelly and Liz were/are great hostesses. They did a good job of spreading themselves around between the group.. they answered everybody’s questions with a smile.

Review: I enjoyed talking to each person individually and sharing stories of our lives, but as I told (other group’s host that I know) Kelly, on the morning of departure, I missed that first night “getting to know you phase” that has been on other trips. This venue–Trump Hotel–didn’t have a place for our groups to really chat and learn names and intro information. No lounge to gather, no seating area in the lobby like some trips, we just sat the 2 groups at two long tables and ate dinner. It made the first night connection awkward. There were several women who had never been on a BB trip and I noticed it took a few days for a couple people to even learn names. Maybe a tweak to have an area to connect the first night? This trip had so many absolutely cool experiences! And every single tour guide was amazing! They were well picked–they knew their stuff, their town, the history and they shared it in fun and engaging ways. We learned so much history without it seeming like a boring lecture. The Mob Museum was incredible; I wish we could have had a little more time there to explore after the tour. Loved the Neon Museum but it would have been fun to see it at sunset instead of the middle of the afternoon so the lights on the signs would be more visible The Sphere was of course phenomenal, but Hoover Dam just blew my mind. Wow. History, nature, engineering, patriotism, everything all together. The Valley of Fire was interesting but a little long of a tour. After the first hour several ladies stopped getting out of the jeep to look at more rocks. Dinners—Guy Fieri’s was good, but the Yardbird and Alexxa’s were fantastic. And nice to have different types of food each night. (First night dinner at Trump Hotel was just average.) But so much fun packed into a few days. Pick a place that you think sounds fun or interesting or you’ve just never been to before or went once and want to go back. Read the description of the itinerary carefully before you go and remember that it might be tweaked a little so be ready to go with the flow. Then make your travel arrangements and sign up! I have signed up for trips where I don’t know anyone and trips with friends and sisters. All have turned out great. The hostesses make the trip so wonderful–they are all sweet and helpful and everything is taken care of for you from the arrival to the departure. No worry about looking for place to visit or finding a guide or making hotel and dinner reservations–it is all done for you with smiles. They have incredible energy and warmth that draws people together. Linda May and Connie P–wow! Didn’t know either before this trip and had a wonderful time with them. They were amazing–don’t know when they slept. Up late, up early, always smiling and ready to go. And they worked hard–we had several issues where we got to restaurants and the reservations were ignored or messed up and they just fixed it for us. I’m sure it had to be frustrating. This group of women was unlike any of the 4 previous trips I have been on–this one had several who would just wander away or sit somewhere else or move ahead and Linda May and Connie were constantly counting and checking for all the ladies. Kind of like that expression “herding cats.” They handled that “wrinkle” on the jeep tour with discretion and grace. Those two did a great job! Love you ladies!

Review: Having Ellen as a host was wonderful. She took care of everything perfectly. I would be happy anytime to know that she was my host! Jessica did a great job and went the extra mile to get what we needed. Dana was the same and always helpful. Tom was so nice . I can’t say enough nice things about these lovely people. From the moment Jessica met me at baggage claim until Dana put me on the shuttle to the airport to leave, I felt secure and comfortable ! All the moments there were special. I always wanted to hike and see waterfalls in Hawaii . This was my 4th trip there and my wish finally came true. I feel more confident to travel with a group of people I have not met before. Review: I came as a recent widow not caring to made new friends. I just wanted to run away from home where the walls seemed too quiet and heavy. What I found was a group of women that all had “stories” of loss, heartache and also happiness. I was not alone! I realized that sorrow and celebration can co-exist. I must go on living and these women showed me by example that travel is not only about the location but also the people. I haven’t cried as hard, danced so uninhibited or laughed so deep! It’s that at this time and place we were all connected in an amazing adventure on this journey of life and this trip of a lifetime! So grateful for this turning point in my grief journey as well. I came with no expectations except to go to a warm beach to turn the calendar to a new year. The room amazed me because it was a luxurious suite, all for me only!!! Every activity taught me to open my mind to new talents I didn’t know I was capable of. I felt like a queen, pampered with all the services and attention. Any travel can cause anxiety, but Beatrice Bradley takes many of those negative thoughts away. They have researched every aspect of the trip and are constantly assessing safety, problems that may arise and communication with the resort and any transportation issues. Karen kept the group informed of daily events available to participate in and future activities. She would fight on our behalf if needed. Jessica was the quiet strength, voice of reason, down to earth and common sense leader. Dana was a welcomed presence, playful yet looking out for his ladies, providing safety. They all were busy behind the scenes in an effort to make our experience the best possible!

Yes there were a couple women I hung out with more than the others that I hit to know quite well and will keep in touch with:) I always like seeing new places and relaxing at the resort was wonderful…the sprinkle if the Dominican Republic are so nice and friendly too. Was interesting seeing the traffic jam we experienced at the Cataraman trip..as I like seeing the real life experiences of the country outside of the resort as well! I would tell her to just do it…she will be hooked and not look back!! If truly nervous..start with a smaller 4-5 day trip in the US for the first one! I was truly impressed with all 3 of the host and hostesses….Jessica, Karen and Dana. It was my first time meeting all of them…I am observant and they all went above and beyond making everyone feel apart of the group. They would individually make the rounds taking time to visit with everyone…working hard on all the details to make the trip seem effortlessly to us…and most of all I loved the way each one would step up and just cherish and help a person whom needed a little extra help! Being surrounded by 14 incredible ladies who were supportive, open, and FUN created a sense of belonging that enhanced the entire experience!!! The shared energy and connection made the trip feel truly special and unforgettable. We will look back fondly with great memories. The slower pace and natural beauty of the destination surprised me. It encouraged me to slow down, be more present, and reconnect with myself, which shifted my perspective on what I need to feel balanced and fulfilled. I would tell her that feeling nervous is natural—but this experience makes it easy to feel at home. This was my first Beatrice Bradley trip, and the inclusiveness and warmth of everyone made me feel welcomed right away. It won’t be my last!!!! Review: This group bonded nicely. I think our hosts definitely facilitated this with their helpful, positive demeanors. This was the first time in 20 years I rang in the New Year with friends. This was my 6th trip so I wasn’t nervous at all. My advice would be to be open to new experiences and just expect to have fun. It was a great idea to have a guy (Dana) accompany us. He did a wonderful job!
